Calypso is the electronic ticketing standard for contactless smart cards, originally designed by a group of European transit operators, it ensures multi-sources of compatible products, and makes possible the interoperability between several operators on the same area.
Offering fast transactions with a high level of security,
this system has reduced maintenance costs as compared to the
magnetic technology still dominating this market.
More than 15 million Calypso cards have already been manufactured
all over the world and are in rapid expansion in the transit
network ticketing applications (more than 40 cities worldwide
are now equipped).
In the region of Paris, the RATP (Paris public transports) and the SNCF (the French railways) are using the Calypso smartcard across their networks. At first limited for annual season tickets, the Calypso card is extended to monthly travel cards from September 2004, and then to other tickets.
Spirtech teams have designed and implemented the ISO 14443
B technology of contactless smart cards used by this standard.
Spirtech ensures the technical work of Calypso for CNA (Calypso Networks Association) and for Innovatron, the company in charge of licensing the technology.
Spirtech organizes training sessions on the Calypso technology,
and offers a technical support to companies wishing to implement
it.
